Thread: Ghost Stories:: Rules:: Placement of Buddha Statues - with Ying-Yang 'interrupt'

by Bill Dozer

Can someone please confirm that the following sequence of events is legal during a single turn. This event came up in a game yesterday and had me scratching my head, and unable to find any rules to clarify what's allowed:

Yang Phase 3

1. Two Buddha statues are in hand (picked up in a previous turn)
2. Place Buddha #1 on an empty ghost space
3. Invoke Pavillion of the Heavenly Winds, via Yin-Yang token, to drop a ghost onto Buddha #1 to exorcise.
4. Place Buddha #2 on the same (now vacant) ghost space.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Accidentally posted this in the "White Moon" forum (which I don't own) so will re-post here:

My understanding of the rules is that a Buddha can be placed at the end of your next turn but only on an empty ghost space that your own Toaist is facing. If that interpretation is correct, then:
What happens on your next turn if your Taoist is not facing an empty Ghost space--it's either on the center tile or facing a ghost?
(Of course, the logical answer is to make sure you put your Taoist in front of an empty space, but that is not always possible).
Do you put the Buddha back on its tile? Do you keep it until your following turn and then place it?

If my understanding of this particular rule is incorrect, can you correct me?

My rules state: "A Taoist standing on one of the four corner tiles may target two adjacent spaces. . . When dice and Tao token combinations allow the player to exorcise either of the two ghosts, the player may choose which of the two ghost cards is discarded."
My question is: What if one of those two ghosts is the incarnation of Wu-Feng, and that incarnation doesn't have a specific requirement (like can only be killed by buddha), then does the above rule apply to Wu-Feng also?

How do you tell if you have the current rules or not?

Also 1) When a new ghost card arrives in play, can you place it on an already placed Buddha to negate them both? This would be a more efficent way to use the Buddha than the Pavillion.

2) Are you obliged to do that when the Buddha is on the only space on a board where the ghost 'should' go (e.g. the board that matches the ghost colour or the active board in the case of a black ghost). Or can you put the new ghost on another board.

3) What if there is only one clear space (11 ghosts in play) and it is occupied by a Buddha. Would a new ghost be forced to arrive there and 'negate' the Buddha or would it slide under as if the Buddha wasn't there.

4) OR in those circumstances, could you opt to lose a Qi and not draw a ghost card, keeping the Buddha primed for a more difficult ghost. Or would you be forced to lose the Qi?

I can't find these answers in that wonderfully written rulebookyuk

1. If the Circle of Prayer Tile becomes haunted, does the tao token remain active on its haunted side? (If it does not, and someone uses the Taoist Altar to unhaunt the CoP tile, how and when is it determined when a Tao token is placed back on it?)

2. If Uncatchable comes into play and both Buddhas are still in the Buddist temple, then what happens to Uncatchable until you can get a Buddist into play?

Now I've seen Sphere's comments, the Unofficial FAQ and the creator, Antoine Bauza's confusing answers.

Apparently his native language is French, so you'd expect he would have read or written the French version of the rules, whereas something might have been missed in the English translation.

The French for the Pavilion of the Heavenly Winds says:
Déplacez un fantôme de votre choix vers n’importe quel emplacement libre ..., puis déplacez un autre Taoïste d’une tuile Village.

Cross-checked with Google Translate and a French speaker, this is
Move a ghost of your choice to any free slot ... then move another Taoist by one Village tile

The English says "any Village tile" but the French says "d'une tuile Village" not "n'import tuile Village" (any village tile).

So, that seems to follow the interpretation of Antoine's comment. However...

Regarding the question of whether you MUST move BOTH a Ghost and a Taoist, the Repos site Ghost Stories FAQ says (http://rprod.com/index.php?page=f-a-q-2 )

French Version wrote:

Vous pouvez déplacer un Fantôme et un Taoïste avec cette action, ou l'un ou l'autre.

Which matches

English Version wrote:

You can move BOTH, or only the taoist, or only the ghost with this action.

But weirdly in this section on the English version, it suddenly jumps back into French and has the same section again, but unlike the French FAQ it says:
Il est obligatoire de déplacer un Fantôme ET un Taoïste avec cette action.

("It's mandatory to move both a Ghost AND a Taoist with this action")

Oh dear, what a mess.

I assume Antoine no longer answers questions about Ghost Stories?

FIRST YY QUESTION: Can a player use the YY token to get the help of the villager on the tile where his taoist IS standing?

The rule book says:

Using his Yin-Yang allows the Taoist to get help from any villager without having to be on that villager’s tile...

It does not seem to preclude using the token to get the help from the villager while being ON that villager's tile. It seems natural to me that the answer is "yes", but I would like to check with more experienced players.

SECOND YY QUESTION: In order to turn a haunted tile using the YY token, does the taoist have to be on the haunted tile or can he be anywhere?

I've been playing supposing that the token can turn haunted tiles anywhere (so my answer would be "no"), but it occurred to me that this could be wrong.

GRAVE WALKER QUESTION

This one is very specific. It is Mary's turn, playing yellow. Her board has two ghosts, so she draws a new one. She draws "Coffin Breakers" (yellow) and places it. Her board is now full. Coffin Breakers' immediate ability calls another ghost. Mary draws "Grave Walker" (black). Her board is already full, so she places this ghost on John's board, which has an empty space. The Grave Walker's immediate ability is the loss of one Qi. Who loses Qi in this particular instance: Mary or John?

Thank you for your help.

Is there a reason for 2 Haunter icons on the board? It seems that there are only 2 possible states:

1) on card at beginning of turn -> move to board
2) on board at beginning of turn -> haunt and move to card

The official rules for state #2 essentially say to move to other icon on board, haunt, then return to card. I fail to see how moving to this other icon makes any difference; it still haunts, and it still returns to card before end of the turn.

I could imagine this being used to make the game easier by making use of the extra slot:

1) on card at beginning of turn -> move to board A
2) on board A at beginning of turn -> move to board B
3) on board B at beginning of turn -> haunt and move to card

Sometimes player A desperately needs black tokens and player B has them all. When can player B dump them?

I recall that a similar question has been asked in another thread. It basically concluded that when fighting ghosts, one is not required to use the dice. By that same logic, player B could fight a blue ghost, and dump black tokens at it, dealing 0 damage. OTOH, boardgamegeek.com/thread/561970/discarding-tao-tokens-for-circle-of-prayer concluded that tokens can only be used when necessary.

It would be nicer if player B could dump his tokens whenever he wanted.

On a similar note, is a player required to take everything the herbalist shop offers? If he wants blue, but can't take black without screwing over player A...

Finally, if player B has black tokens, but there are none in the bank, can player B put a black token on circle of prayer?
The manual says "... or perform an exchange with the one already present." It's implying with the bank, but English is an ambiguous language, and technically, exchanging with the player's supply is still "an exchange".

I just want to make sure I got this right:

The game is lost as soon as any (3) of the (9) village tiles are haunted,
They DO NOT have to be in a row. Is that correct?

I guess I'm not looking in the right place, what is the point of the boards having Qi?

And in a two player game, can we not use their powers like in a single player game?

Can I use the same tao dice for more than one ghost? So if I roll 2 reds, and both ghosts on the corner are red, can I exorcise them both?

If I have a red token on the circle of prayer, does that reduce the cost both both ghosts at the same time?

The rules stating:

Step 2. Board overrun?
If all 3 ghost spaces on his board are occupied at the beginning of his turn, the player loses 1 Qi token and does not perform Step 3.

After this it is said:

Step 3. Arrival of a ghost
It might happen that the 12 spaces are already occupied by ghosts when the player must draw a new one. In such situation, instead of adding the ghost, the active Taoist loses 1 Qi token.

Is there a contradiction between these two statements? how both conditions may happen? When my board is overrun, I am skipping step 3 with losing Qi, so arrival of ghost is not happening and we are proceeding to Yang phase.

Thread: Ghost Stories:: Rules:: Number of Cards in Deck

I'm a bit confused concerning the number of cards in the deck. The iPad Version seems to differ from the rules in the standard rulebook and in the physical game I'm not sure anymore about how many cards should be totally in there in a game.

What I have as a base: Standard Rulebook:

1or2 Player game:
10 ghost, 1 incarnation
10 ghost, 1 incarnation
10 ghost, 1 incarnation
rest

3or4 Player game:
10 ghost, 1 incarnation
10 ghost, 1 incarnation
10 ghost, 1 incarnation
10 ghost, 1 incarnation
rest

So how much is the rest in standard Ghost Stories?

Regarding White Moon it says to take card out depending on the number of players 5,10,15 cards for 3,2,1 players respectively.

So how about the rest now for:
1,2,3 or 4 player games?

Thanks in Advance

I read something on another thread that made me wonder if I was doing it wrong with the game.

When a curse die is on the middle section of a ghost card, regardless of which board said ghost with curse die is on, every active player has to roll a curse die on their turn.

^ Is this incorrect?

Secondly, all haunters, everywhere on the board, move one space forward at the beginning of every player's turn.

^ Is this, too, incorrect?

It would explain the insane difficulty of the game.

Regardless, Ghost Stories has one of the worst rulebooks ever written. Even while coming with three books in three different languages, it still sucks. =P

Hi, Just played our first co-op game ever and of Ghost stories.
We played 3 player with the Red board being the Neutral board, we did not use the power tokens except for once as this was just a learning game for us Dad,Mum and son age 7 who plays games well.
My question is in a 3 player game at set up do you place just one Power token on the centre village tile? after reading the rules im thinking it would be just one as there would be only the one Neutral board.
Thanks in advance for reply and we enjoyed our learning game but we were defeated by the game "as expected" but we did exorcise 24 Ghosts before 3 Village tile were haunted and im sure we will do better next game!

Played our second family game of Ghost stories last night and we just won but I’m not recording the victory as when checking the rules we forgot some that would have made the game harder as we were still using the Neutral boards power after it had become possessed through having No Qi .
My question is now, we were playing 3 player and the Neutral board was The Blue board and Second wind use a Village help twice or attempt 2 exorcisms,
When playing a Neutral power token

1) Do you have to have your Taoist on the Village tile you want to use the power token for “if you want to use the double power of a Villager”

2)If I was on the Herbalists Shop “Roll 2 Tao dice for 2 Tao tokens, could I do this as my Yang phase and then roll 2 Tao dice twice more if using a Neutral power token so I could receive a total of 6 tokens?

3)How would this work for using a Neutral power token on the Circle of Prayer , would I then reduce the power of a given selected Ghost by 3 instead of one if again I used on my Yang phase and power token for the second wind ability?

Much thanks in advance………………………………………..Neutral power Tokens definitely for me seem to cause the most confusion, but loving the Game and it Drips in the theme and Art which is stunning.

If a Taoist dies, his board becomes possessed, and there is a tormentor on his board, who rolls the die? Who is affected by the result of the die if the die says to lose all Tao tokens.
It is my understanding that if it comes up with the -1 Qi side that one of the living Taoists will have to take the damage.(right?) I am curious as to what happens if it comes up on the lose all tao token side. Do living Taoists choose who among them gets to lose their tokens? Or is it treated like a neutral board that is NOT possessed and ignores the die roll? There is nothing in the rules that say anything about this scenario that I can find.

The rules state when referring to a possessed board that "any further loss of Qi points (i.e. board overrun or tormentor) must be endured by a player of your choice"

This does not mention specifically anything abut the loss of tao tokens.

thanks

Thread: Ghost Stories:: Rules:: Using rewards from exorcism in corner fights

Here's something I'm not entirely clear on.

Let's say my taoist is attacking two ghosts at once.
1. a "yellow tank" with a resistance of 4 that yields 2 tao tokens of your choice
2. A blue ghost with a shield

I exorcise the tank, and decide to take a blue tao token.

Can I use this token now to kill the shielded ghost?

In a similar scenario,

I'm fighting a Black Maiden and another ghost in a corner fight.
If I exorcise the Black Maiden, is her token lock ability dispelled immediately upon defeat, and can I use one of my tao tokens now to kill the other ghost?
