Thread: Ghost Stories:: Rules:: Haunted Buddhist Temple question

Just to be sure, if the Buddhist Temple is haunted, but the Taoists have already the Buddha figurines in their possession, can they use them?

From what I understand they can, they just can't reuse them until the Buddhist Temple has been restored.

Im just running through a solo game and a couple of really dumb questions have come up but even though I have HH's guide I am still left scratching my head so major thanks in advance if you can answer these:

*When setting up solo I take it that i only set up ONE taoist? Or do I use all four? Reading HH's rules I would assume I use one taoist and just run the shorter round of Yin and no Yang for the other players?

*What happens to the taoist that is stood on a tile that gets turned over? Nothing??

I may have another couple of questions in a mo....

Thread: Ghost Stories:: Rules:: Question on yin yang token

The yin yang token states it can be used at any time so long as it is not in the middle of an action. If I am the blue taoist utilizing the power to talk to a villager and attack, can i utilize a village square, use my token to ask for aid from another villager which gives me tao tokens, and use those tao tokens in a fight against a monster adjacent from me? Is there some flaw in my thinking along any of these steps? Thanks in advance!

After losing right at the end of our first game I have a couple of rules queries...

If the blue Taoist has the 'use ability twice' power, if they use a ying yang to activate a village tile, do they use it twice?

I have seen some rules posts mention the village tile that reduces the power of a particular colour of ghost reduce it by one, when we read the rules as reducing it to one, were we playing it correctly?

Thanks,

Mike...

Thread: Ghost Stories:: Rules:: Tormentor ghosts on neutral player board

My wife and I just played our first 2 player game with 2 neutral boards but 1 thing we were not sure about was the neutral boards turn if they had a ghost with the tormenting ability. It says in the rules that on a neutral boards turn you should
1=Perform ghost actions (so this would mean advancing any haunters and rolling the curse die if applicable for tormentors but my question is who actually takes the damage if any from the curse die)
Thanks

Hey all, just got this game. Thanks for the rules clarifications in advance!

1) Can there be more than 1 tao token on the circle of prayer at a time?

2a) The ghost ability that "tao dice have no effect on this ghost" has the icon with a shield and a tao dice... What is the ghost ability that just has the shield icon but no tao dice.

2b) is this ability only in effect for the players turn it is activated, or is it a persistent effect?

3) when revealing a new ghost (say yellow) and all three spots on that board are available... may the players choose where to place this ghost, or does it appear somewhere automatically?

Thread: Ghost Stories:: Rules:: Is Bottomless Pockets required to take a Tao token?

Here's the situation: I am playing on the iPad and playing Bottomless Pockets solo. I have all the tokens in my possession and the last incarnation is... "Dark Mistress" (the one that disables all the Tokens and requires 3 blue to exorcise). The game is pretty much lost at that point because I cannot set the circle of prayer and the chances of throwing 3 blue/wilds are very low.

So I play again, and this time I tried to not take too many Tao tokens, but it seems like I'm forced to do so. I tried using token up elsewhere but I ended up forcing to take the last few tokens... and then the "Dark Mistress " appears again.

On iPad's implementation, "Bottomless Pockets" is required to take a Tao token. The rules are a little vague:

Before his movement, he takes a Tao token of whatever color he chooses from among those available in the supply.

Alternatively, can one populate the circle of prayer with a token from your own hand?

Thread: Ghost Stories:: Rules:: Green with Strength of a Mountain - Rolls curse die on Cemetery?

So that's it.
If Green player is on the Cemetery to resurrect another taoist, must he play the Curse die if he has selected the Strength of a Mountain board side?

I believe the Green taoist with SoaM will NEVER roll the curse die, but that's a Village tile action... so I'm confused.

Thanks!

I think I almost have the rules down, after receiving a copy of the game with the first version rules in trade. I want to make sure I have one thing right: if the Taoist Altar becomes haunted, the only way to return it to its active state is to use a yin yang token, correct?

Thread: Ghost Stories:: Rules:: Fallen Monks - QI - Am I doing it right?

I've played a few solo games and a couple of games with other people and I'm yet to come close to winning.

The board would frequently become saturated with ghosts and we'd all start dropping dead; Just checking I'm not making it harder on my self.

So the Ghosts like the Fallen Monks that stop you using your power also have the 'bring out another ghost' symbol on, so we brought out a second ghost, which could sometimes lead to bringing out a fourth ghost right?

Just checking I'm doing that right as the icon combo isn't in the rule book and there's no examples of the power stop occurring without the ghost icon before it.

Also, this is how we've been loosing qi.

If at the start of our turn our individual board has 3 ghosts on it, that player looses a qi. Additionally, if when it comes time to draw a card there is no place to put one (all 12 spaces are full) then a card isn't drawn and instead that player looses an additional qi. Which in my experience usually leads to a wipe out, as a 12 ghost run usually comes later in the game when we're all down to about 2 qi, so red player looses his last 2 qi, dies (obviously doesn't take an action) then the same happens to all proceeding players and the games over.

Is that correct? Am I doing it right?

Thanks

Thread: Ghost Stories:: Rules:: Move a Wu-Feng incarnation with Pavilion?

Wow, suddenly this stupid question has crossed my mind. I've searched in the forum but didn't find:
Is it the Wu-Feng incarnation card considered a Ghost Card?
- If so, just forget it.
- If not, then Pavilion cannot move this card.

So, what is it?
thanks!

In my copy (revised edition), I have some ghosts that have the shield icon with a die shown. The player aid tells us exactly what this is.

One of the ghosts, however, has just a shield icon (no die), but there is no explanation for this. Is it the same as the shield w/ die?

"If all three spaces on that specific board are already occupied, then the active player chooses any other location", What are the conditions for that? I thought if the 3 spaces are full...you don't add a ghost and lose a Qi token.

anyone could help me?

Thanks!!!

The Spanish rules I have are ambiguous in this regard.
In english, it looks like you can only place buddhas on empty spaces. But the spanish rules says that you can put the budha on any space (I understand, with or without a ghost).

So, can I place the Buddha on a ghost card, thus eliminating that ghost?
Thanks!

Thread: Ghost Stories:: Rules:: Losing Qi

I have played my copy a few times and got the iPad version. It seems that I am losing Qi alot when ghosts are flipped, which I though only happened when all 12 ghost slots were taken and you had to draw one.

But the iPad version seems to take Qi from the player drawing the ghosts a lot more often.

Could someone please clarify the conditions where Qi is lost at this game?

TIA!

I searched the rules forum, but didn't find a clear response to this very simple question (mainly because the one thread where this was asked before didn't have a very precise thread starter):

If I'm attempting a double exorcism, do the dice get used up as I allocate them to a particular ghost? e.g. If I have two ghosts, both with three green as their resistance, and I roll three green dice, do these dice get applied to both ghosts or only one?

Thread: Ghost Stories:: Rules:: Enfeeblement Mantra clarification

Can the enfeeblement mantra be moved, at will, by the Yellow Monk? Logic says yes, but the rules only reference the mantra being returned upon the spirit leaving the game.

Interpretation one leads to flexibility, while the latter interpretation speaks to a stronger strategic sense.

Which is it?

Thread: Ghost Stories:: Rules:: Neutral power Token clarification (Blue vs Green).

by Anarchosyn

The rules state:

"A neutral power token allows the active player to use during his
Yang phase the power of a non-possessed (see below) neutral
board. Such action is supplementary to his own power"

However, if I'm blue, using the ability to do two exorcisms, and pay for green's "roll four, and ignore the curse die," does the power last till the end of the yang phase, or would I need to pay twice (which, of course, is against the rules)?

I run into a problem with either interpretation.

1) If it lasts till the end of the Yang phase for a single payment, why would the rules need to stipulate: "A player may use several neutral power tokens in the same turn, but not for the same power" (unless it's just a stipulation to avoid moving with red multiple times, etc).

2) If the power doesn't last till the end, then it would be hard to integrate the "never roll a curse die" element into the equation, as it generally comes after the exorcism(s) in the Yang phase, no?

The logic of #2 makes me feel more confident that one token can accommodate both of blue's rolls, but I wanted to get the consensus on this.

Thread: Ghost Stories:: Rules:: Two final questions: Repellent Beauty and Passing.

Having read the uFAQ, Official FAQ, and many threads, I now feel capable of teaching this game to my group. However, in my last solo play, two final questions arose:

1) I came across Repellent Beauty, and her "every turn" effect icon is represented solely with a shield (no dice pictured). Is this a misprint, or a unique effect?

2) During the Yang phase, movement is expressly listed as optional in the rules, as is placing a Buddha statue. However, a literal reading of the rules makes it seem like you have to do either an exorcism or use a village tile. Normally this would be a non-issue, but I found myself attracted to the center tile for the purposes of collecting neutral power tokens, and didn't really want to trigger the tile present (it was the one that gave a qi+token for generating a ghost). Can one opt to not take either action?

Thanks.

Thread: Ghost Stories:: Rules:: 1 player vs 4 player game which ghosts are activated

hey. i would like to clarify something after reading the faqs, thebidiots guide, and several posts in here. please tell me if my understanding is now correct.

4 player game...

lets say that each board has at least one haunter and one tormentor on it. its the start of the yin phase precedding the yellow taoists turn. step one says all of the left and center stone abilities are applied. during this yinphase would the haunters and tormentors on all four boards activate, or only the haunter ajd tormentor on the yellow board because the yellow taoistwill be starting his phase next?

after reading the faqs it seems like only the yellows ghosts would activate.the way my friends and i played is that all ghosts on all boards would activate! no wonder the game was so damn hard!

in contrast....during a 1 player game.....

if there are ghosts and tormentors on all four boards every ghost in play should activate during the yin phase because there would only be one taoist priest in play. this is how i have been playing my one player games.
