Thread: Ghost Stories:: Rules:: haunting tiles... when exactly is it game over?

by shooshoo

One minor detail I needed to ask about. I think that in previous editions of this game the rules stated that the game ended if 4 tiles were haunted. In later editions this was changed to 3 (it says 3 in my manual).

The part I wasn't totally sure is when exactly is the game over?

In this scenario imagine that two tiles are haunted, and it is the start of a new yin phase. Another haunting occurs bringing the total now to 3. Does the game end immediately, or does the taoist get to finish his yang phase, thereby giving him the chance to unhaunt at least one tile and allowing the game to continue for at least another round?

Thread: Ghost Stories:: Rules:: I think we got it wrong the first time - ghost activations

SO I got this game yesterday and we played about 6 games, losing all of them terribly. Today, we tried another, and my friend pointed out how silly something was - we were activing all ghosts every turn (haunters and cursers).

Is this right? We switched, the rulebook says it's the other way, but now the game feels almost... easy. We haven't lost any of the one game we played since the switch, but I feel confused enough that it's worth asking here.

Note: the "easiness" is probably because we got a lot of experience on a much harder game mode, and the freedom to actually use village tiles was huge.

So... Do ghosts activate each turn? Or each turn of the board they're on?

Thanks,
Paul

Read the FAQ and I'm still wondering.

It just seems like one side is flat out superior to the other. Rerolling a tao/curse die VS getting an extra tao die and straight up ignoring the curse die.

Am I missing something? The 2nd power seems totally better.

If a Neutral board rolls "loss of all Tao tokens" on the Curse die, is it simply unaffected, or does the effect exert onto one of the Monks?

Or is it only when a Neutral board gets possessed that the effects of the Curse die start being passed onto the Monks?

Another query regarding using the Green Taoist's power as neutral:

Can a Taoist that uses this power as neutral reroll the Curse die as well, or not roll one at all?(in case of the alternate power).
It seems like rolling for Curses is not part of the Yang phase, which is why I think it's prohibited.

Hi,
I read through the threads from Ghost Stories forum, and I get more confuse with this rule.

1. How many village can be haunted before the game is lost? (Rulebook states that once three villages are haunted, the game immediately loose).

Thanks.

Just played this with a group for the first time the other night and I just have a few questions. A big thank you in advance to anyone who can help. I read through several threads and FAQS on here and just when I seem to find a answer for these respective questions, someone contradicts it. Without further ado...

1. Regarding double exorcisms, our game we played that you can attempt to exorcise both ghosts at a corner and if you only get one of the two you can only exorcise one. Now that I'm re-reading everything, it seems like you half to exorcise both or nothing with any combination of dice and your power tokens during an exorcism correct?

3. Regarding God's Favorite power, we played that you can use this ability on ANY Taoists turn (not just green's) once to reroll their curse dice or tao dice (Ala Mandy's ability in Arkham). I am assuming this is incorrect and can only be used on the green fellow's turn?

4. This last one has come up a few time during a game. When a curse die is rolled (let's say as a result of an successful exorcism) and the " first active village tile in front of the ghost becomes haunted" icon comes up. What do you do? The ghost is already exorcised. I assume you still haunt the next available tile in his row right? What is this icon comes up as the result of rolling the curse die after using the cemetery ability? What do you do then? There's no ghost. Do you just haunt the cemetery automatically?

Whew! Thanks again!

I have a few questions concerning shields.

First of all, shields are usually on 1-resistance ghosts....
so when on the Circle of prayer is a tao token with a given colour (e.g.red) in order to exorcise this ghost do you have to use one of your tao token (also red) or do I just have to say that I'm exorcising this ghost and killing it instantly loosing only my action.

Second question. let's say I have 2 ghosts a tormentor and one with a shield, those the shield also apply to the tormentor or only to the ghost with the shield.

Thanks for answers.

Can a power token be used and retrieved on the same turn? For instance, could I use the last available power token, then, on the same turn, move to the middle and retrieve all 3 tokens?

On my first play tonight my partner and I were doing fairly well, considering how hard we had heard the game was. But then a ghost card came out which stated we needed to draw another ghost card. That ghost card then said the same thing... an empty board went to nearly a full one in one turn.

That might be a slight exaggeration, but is that right anyway? Can you get a chain of ghosts arriving?
Also, if there are two negative effects upon a ghosts arrival do you activate both or pick one? In what order do you activate the ghosts powers that are already on the board?

Questions, questions...

I see this question asked in the forum, but not answered:
Since there are only 8 haunter figures in the game, what should happen in the unlikely but possible event that more than 8 haunters are on the boards? Does that mean that ninth and subsequent haunter cards don't actually haunt or what? Do we substitute figures with something else?

Thread: Ghost Stories:: Rules:: Nameless incarnation

Does the Nameless only remove the tao token from the Circle of Prayer on his arrival or does the player also lose one of his own tao tokens (if so - which player? Active or the one on whose board the ghost is placed?)?

The reason I'm asking is this - the rules seem to suggest that all that happens is the removal of the tao token from the Circle of Prayer. However, the icon used on his left side is described in the ghost abilities sheet as "the active player loses 1 tao token if he has any". This icon is only used on three cards, and for the remaining two (soul eater black ghost and bone cracker incarnation) it's a group thing - so everybody loses a tao token, not just the active player, and if Nameless doesn't take away a token from the active player either, then the description seems superfluous, as it doesn't really describe any situation that can happen in the game.

On the other hand, if the player loses one of his tao, should it actually be an active player (one that drew the incarnation)? Normally effects apply to the player, on whose board the card goes (like with -1 qi of grave walker or losing abilities).

So which is it ?

I have a question about the central ghost action involving the shield icon. I see the shield icon with the dice giving it protection from dice, but some cards have just the shield. Is that protection from Tao tokens?

Also, the shield ghost action in the central location is that only active during the current players turn or is activated for every player. In other words, if it was my turn could I excorcise the ghost with the shield and dice icon with a dice if it was on another player board?

Thread: Ghost Stories:: Rules:: quick clarification for Red's abilities

Hey everyone.

I was reading some posts in here and came across one that described the Red monk's powers. I think I've been playing him wrong.

For his flying ability, he can move to any tile on the board during his turn.... but somebody also mentioned he can activate any tile. I'm not sure if he meant that he can fly to ANY tile and activate it, or activate any tile from the one he's standing on.

For his other ability about moving another monk, Is he only allowed to move ANOTHER monk 1 space? I thought he could move someone to any space he wanted. No actions can be taken with the monk that you moved right (just allowed to move him)? Also, does it have to be another player or can you move yourself twice (e.g., move yourself to an adjacent location, and then use your normal move to move one more space).

If a Taoist dies, you're supposed to do just step 1 and 2, but no step 3.

So resolve center stone effects...
if it's something like roll the curse die, does the next taoist in turn order resolve the effects?

If the board is overrun, then lose a qi, but since he's dead, does the next player in turn order lose the qi?

No arrival of ghost even if that dead Taoist is NOT overrun?

I think I got this correct, but wanna be sure.

How come the Incarnation rewards include a YinYang? The game ends after defeating it and a YinYang does not effect the points scoring, the only thing I can think is that you could immediately use it to bring back a Toaist/ nullify a haunted tile for points. Any ideas?

Thread: Ghost Stories:: Rules:: Any rules regarding discarding taos?

1. Can a player doing an exorcism choose to discard tao in excess of what is needed for a successful exorcism? (Say, he rolls no red tao, he has three red tao tokens, and the ghost requires only two tao to exorcise. Can he choose to return 3 red tao to the reserve?)

2. Can a player doing an exorcism choose to discard taos not required during his successful/unsuccessful exorcism? (Same scenario as above, but suppose another monk needs a black tao, and the exorcising monk has them all -- can the exorcising monk discard black tao on a successful/ unsuccessful exorcism of a red ghost?)

3. Can a player choose to discard tao at any time during his turn (or during his Yang phase), even if his action that turn was to interact with a village tile?

4. Can a player choose to discard tao even when it is not his turn?

I ask because sometimes a non-Yellow monk is on the far side of the board from a particularly tough ghost, and the Yellow "deep pockets" player could use a certain tao that the other player has.

Thread: Ghost Stories:: Rules:: Exorcising Uncatchable without the Pavilion of the Heavenly Wind village tile?

by pseudofenton

I was originally going to post this in the Guardhouse expansion forums, but I realised it applied to the (as yet unowned) White Moon expansion too (as both can replace one of the core 9 tiles with the one that expansion adds). As such I'm posting it here as its more of a general question, especially when you play with other custom tiles.

So, the rules in the Guardhouse expansion say to exclude Uncatchable from the potential Incarnations if the Buddhist Alter has been replaced by the Guardhouse - but not when the Pavilion is replaced.

This means the only way to have Uncatchable become 'Buddha-ed' is for it to come out and be placed on a Buddha. However as Uncatchable is black, you either need to have a a Buddha on the persons board who drew it, or have their board full so you can place it where the Buddha is. You also need to ensure there is a Buddha out to begin with.

I'm aware that with the Guardhouse you can technically spy on up and coming Incarnations to see if it is Uncatchable - and then try to reshuffle the ghosts so that it comes out at the right time. This potentially may involve repeatedly pushing them deeper to buy time if there is no Buddah placed yet (or worse, it is but there's no means of not having it used by another ghost before Uncatchable appears during the right turn). It may also be easily scuppered with any roll of a curse die.

So although it's not impossible to succeed - without the Pavilion of the Heavenly Wind village tile Uncatchable really does live up to his name. You have one chance to get him, and if you don't you've no chance at all of winning.

If you're playing with the White Moon expansion instead, the Kung-Fu School makes it even harder to win, as you are just relying on the whims of fate as its power cannot help at all against Uncatchable and when it appears.

So, would it be fair to exclude Uncatchable if either the Buddhist Temple or Pavilion are replaced? Or even rule that should the Pavilion have been replaced that you may place a Buddah directly onto him (making him significantly easier)? What are you thoughts, how have you dealt with this issue?

Thread: Ghost Stories:: Rules:: Question about Sorcerer's Hut, Cemetery, Blue, and Green Taoists

by antilog17

Maybe I'm missing something, but when playing, if Blue has the "use village tile twice" and Green has the "no rolling curse die" powers, doesn't the game because significantly easier?

1) Blue just constantly suicide runs with the Sorcerer's Hut (two ghosts at a time, can be the hardest ghosts)

2) Green revives Blue with no penalty.

3) Other two players deal with remaining ghosts and prepping for Wu Feng.

This seems highly broken. And I have played the game doing this and it does make it significantly easier the couple of times I have played this way. The 3-strength with haunter ghosts are no longer a drastic concern and forfeiting the rewards on 4-strength ghosts was generally worth it since tokens can be saved for Wu Feng.

Yes, I realize that colors and Taoist powers are supposed to be randomly assigned, but that's still a 1 in 4 chance for a "broken" setup.

Is there something I'm missing?
